National Novel Writing Month

Within the past few days I have been reading my school’s newspaper and came across an article that really caught my eye. There is another challenge on the horizon and remember what I said about me and the word “challenge”. It’s the November writing challenge and its main goal is to help writers make a novel within one month. Apparently November is National Novel Writing Month and there are 400,000 participants that are attempting to rise above the challenge. I’ve never heard of this challenge but I would so love to partake in it. I have put off rewriting my book long enough. I need to get that on novel out of the way and start writing its sequels before today’s technology influences me, because the book series takes place in 2008. So the longer I wait, the more I risk with inaccuracies. Writing 1,666 words a day towards my novel would definitely help accomplish this goal.

Unfortunately right now I don’t have the time to write a novel. That doesn’t stop me from participating in the challenge. The article in the newspaper I was reading encouraged the students to do the challenge, just don’t write a novel. For me, I could do the challenge by blogging and writing my fanfiction. Sadly I am behind on writing my fanfic and I haven’t been posting so much on here, so I could find this challenge to be very beneficial. At this very point, in this very post, I have written over two hundred words. It’s not 1,666 words but it is a start. Considering I’m starting today, I’m actually 6,664 words behind. I could all of my focus on this blog or all on my fanfic, but since I am behind on both then I will do both.

I will say that even if you aren’t getting paid for it, writing can be a full time job. I will once again mention fellow blogger, Opinionated Man, because his blog is waaaay more successful than mine. I get e-mailed every time he publishes a new post and I am just so amazed by him, because it’s never just 1-3 posts each time he publishes, no it’s 12-15. I’m not quite sure what his system is but I do know that he has a special blogging schedule for himself (I think it’s the weekends), and it works! When I first got this blog I didn’t know what to write about, but now I do. I know what it is that is getting me views, so I’ll start thinking of other blog posts to write related to those terms. On top of that, I have a list of blog prompts that I could also write and it only gets longer. I say writing can be a full time job, because when I think about what it is that attracts views to my blog and what I could write to attract more views, then I want to get the next post out there before it becomes “old news”. I haven’t been quite successful doing this, but I will get there someday.

So hopefully I will beat this challenge. I will have three things to write for this challenge:My blog, fanfic, and the school newspaper. My readers would appreciate it if I started publishing more chapters to my fanfic, especially after I told them that the story isn’t over unless I say “The End”. As for this blog, it just doesn’t feel right to not post as often as I did this past summer. Hope you guys enjoy what I write this month!

This is really cool! Thank you for sharing it. I’ve never heard of it either, but I am going to give it a try. Who knows, even if I don’t finish the whole thing, I may have part of a novel written by the end of it! 🙂

  3. Ah, yes… NaNoWriMo… I tried it last year, and failed — I’m STILL working on the novel I intended to finish back then. Oh well…
It’s closing in on being finished, though. Probably sometime next year I’ll see about publishing it.
Anyway… good luck to you on your challenge!
(Is ‘van Helsing’ your actual last name? That would be awesome if it was!)

  4. I was going to do that this year too but, life got in the way. This is a great idea, and I’ve talked to a lot of people who have done it. For some writers, they thrive on deadlines, me? If I set a writing goal for myself, I stick to it for awhile, then it seems to fizzle, so I decided to focus not so much on making deadlines for myself. I’m just going to let that “shit” fly, if you know what I mean. 🙂

A big thanks to Opinionated Man for reblogging this post. I appreciate that. You rock, man!

  5. Good luck!!! I started last week and have added 6000 words to my novel so far… it’s a challenge … but I kept finding I was adding too many new characters and had to stop to go back to analyze….. uh!!!

  6. All the best and thank you for finding my blog I am very new at this, so please be patient with me

Give me a piece of your mind
